First, take note that Amazon is inter-mixing reviews for two entirely different models here: the Sanyo 6588 and 2588 series. THIS REVIEW IS FOR the EM-S2588W (2/3 ft @ 800 watts in white).
Next, consider that a compact microwave of this size is typically used for reheating a dinner plate, cooking a potato, heating soup, hot-water for tea, and warming up a brownie, cake, or other snack.
THE GOOD:
Interior light comes on as soon as you open the door.
'Instant on' via +30 second button for quick reheating.
Three custom memory programs for your most common tasks.
Nice full-height door handle (no button) for opening it.
Compact, attractive design, turntable, 800 watts of power.
It CAN handle a dinner plate size of 10-3/4 inches diameter MAX... somehow I got lucky guessing the interior size, as our plates barely fit. (exterior dimensions provided by Amazon ARE accurate.)
If you're hoping it will handle a 10-7/8 inch diameter plate, NOPE. Again, that's 10.75 inches MAX.THE BAD:
None, really... my partner is an engineer and he says "for an oven of this size, it performs well, is quiet, and heats evenly. Those who complain about it lacking power are probably expecting too much from such a compact oven."THE UGLY:
One complaint mentioned about the control panel (our unit included) is the poor contrast (background vs. foreground) on the section with the 'one-touch' buttons for popcorn, potato, soup, etc... making them hard to read. Our solution was to memorize the position of the one (potato) button we use... no big deal. All the other keys are crisp and clear.
It appears Sanyo had quality control issues with screen printing in that section of the control panel, because it does -not- occur on every unit. Some resellers discount the affected units down to $55.
FINAL NOTES:
Pulling on the door handle may cause the unit to move around a bit, but this is easily solved by using your thumb for leverage against the control panel while pulling the door open with your fingers. And finally, we don't cook popcorn in a microwave (we make it the good old-fashioned way), so we can't review that function.
OVERALL, this is a GREAT little microwave, VERY compact, attractive, with an easy-to-use interface.
