I bought the first of this microwave ovens three yers ago. The previous m/w I owned for almost 10 years; that Panasonic oven was the best m/w I have owned. Anyway, Best Buy was running this m/w on special (I can't remember specific price, but it was less than $100.00). We took it home, unpacked it, put the ring with wheels in the indentation on the floor of the m/w & the turntable on top of that. We put in a cup of water & boiled that. We use our m/w every day, several times a day, to reheat food & beverages, cook packaged frozen meals, sometimes pop popcorn. I assume most folks use their m/w's this way. It's just two of us, so I guess our useage would be average. It lasted several months & then just quit. We checeked the circuit breaker & there is also a paper shredder plugged into the same outlet - that was still working. Wouldn't you know! We were reheating our supper plates when that happened! Fortunately for us, my in-laws live in the downstairs apartment & my husband took his plate & zapped it the folks' m/w. I called the customer service number at GE & they sent out a contract service repair guy. He replaced a funny-looking fuse. It was a ivory-colored ceramic tube with two wires exteding out of it, as I recall. The m/w lasted a few months, but still under the mfg warranty period. Called GE again. This time, they told me to "take the m/w back to the store where we bought it & have them give you a new one." We did & Best Buy would not take it back. We called GE cust. svce from Best Buy. Was told then to "just dispose of it." We sent the sales slip to GE & they sent us a certificate (basically an I.O.U.) that when we buy another GE product, we would send that sales slip to GE & finally get a real (cashable) check. We did - it took several months & my perseverence, but we did finally get the money we paid for the first "defective" m/w! Now, the "replacement" has "died". When I purchased this one, I go the extended warranty (about $20.00). We're taking it back to Best Buy tonight.
Bottom line: would I recmmend this m/w to a friend? Probably not, unless they are just looking for something cheap & are willing to purchase the extended warranty. Even so, it is less than $100.00. If you can "live" with knowing this appliance is not going to last "forever", it might be worth the money. If I did not have the extended warranty, I woud not buy this m/w again. I had actually forgotten Ihad purchased the ext warr. I was ready to start looking on the Internet to see if I could find the schematic drawing & the fuse that got replaced in the other m/w. My father-in-law is "Mr. Fix-it" & probably has the working knowledge to find the fuse & put a meter on it to see if it is blown. If that didn't work, I would have gone shopping for another Pansonic m/w. We also have a "cheap back-up" microwave that we can put into service quickly when our main m/w "dies".
